Living in an endless summer, Mise En Scene is one of this years top breakout indie bands. Emerging from the hotbed of the Winnipeg music scene, this arresting duo have already made waves through out Canada and recently returned to Calgary for Freeze Fest.
The cheerful and articulate Jodi Dunlop finds time to talk about the bands exciting future while sitting in a parked car waiting for her counterpart, Stefanie Blondal Johnson.
For most bands the showcase circuit is a lot of drinking, big talk and empty promises. However, for Mise En Scene, these showcases have made managers and PR companies fall in love. Ever since signing with their current label (Pipe and Hat) at NXNE, the girls have begun an ever-climbing journey into the hearts of the Canadian music industry. With a foray into the States for the upcoming SXSW, I ask Dunlop how the duo get along with so much writing and touring together.
“We’re together 24-7. We’re really lucky that we’re really good friends” Says Dunlop. Sharing beds and endless miles on the road doesn’t seem to discourage these girls from making music their full time jobs.
Having dropped out of art school in the last year to pursue music, you can see why Mise En Scene’s aesthetic is so clever and original. In an almost Synesthesiac interpretation of their music, Dunlop and Johnson scoured thrift stores to find materials that represented a different array of songs. The product of their labor takes the form of two inspired album covers for their North American and UK releases, as well as some stunning stage wear.
