THE terminally ill British teenager who made a “miraculous recovery” after coughing up a tumour has returned to hospital.
Stephen Sutton, 19, told his supporters on Facebook he was back in hospital after developing “breathing difficulties”.
AMAZING TWIST: terminally ill teen ‘coughs up’ tumour
He has raised $5 million for Teenage Cancer Trust charity since he posted an image of himself giving his “final thumbs-up” from his hospital bed in Birmingham.
Amazingly, the inspirational Sutton made a recovery when he coughed up his tumour and was released from hospital.
But, as he revealed on Facebook on Sunday, he is back in hospital again.
“I’ve still got the cough, then quite quickly developed a wheeze in my breathing and breathlessness upon any physical exertion.
“There’s no immediate panic and I’m currently quite stable – I have been put on nebulisers and other meds which are currently helping my symptoms hugely.”
He said: “The doctors think there may be something restricting my airway again, they’re not sure exactly what yet though (tumour regrowth, infection, inflammation, are all potential reasons mentioned), but are currently discussing the possibilities and my scan results to decide what to do next.”
Sutton won hearts — and more than 400,000 Facebook fans — after setting up a bucket list of 46 things he wanted to do before he died.
After being admitted to hospital on May 2, he said he thought he was a “goner” after suffering a collapsed lung days ago.
But his disease took an amazing twist after he “coughed up a tumour”.
Sutton was just 15 when he was diagnosed with bowel cancer.
Tragically, doctors initally misdiagnosed his illness as mere constipation for six months, he told the Daily Mail.
If this had this not occurred, Sutton said, his prognosis might be very different.
He underwent surgery but the cancer was aggressive and spread to different parts of his body. Many doctors and operations later, his disease was declared incurable.
So he decided to make the most of the time he had left, setting up the bucket list in tandem with a campaign to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Celebrities including Robbie Williams, Chris Martin and Steve Coogan took to Twitter as part of the fund-raising campaign #thumbsupforstephen
Over the weekend, a petition at change.org calling for the Queen to bestow a knighthood on Sutton for his charity work has attracted over 30,000 signatures.
Ever the joker, Sutton described his latest re-admission to hospital as “very inconvenient”.
